Abstract
The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is one of the most unique raptors of the American grasslands. Unlike most owls, this species uses underground burrows as both shelter and breeding sites, closely linking it to burrowing animals and grassland ecosystems. In the grasslands of northern Mexico, the burrowing owl is part of a complex ecological network connecting subterranean life with the surface. This article describes its main biological characteristics, diet, and relationship with Mexican grasslands, as well as the threats these ecosystems face and the importance of their conservation.
