Beyond the garden: The historical presence of women in botany (17th–19th Centuries)

Abstract

Este texto explora la subrepresentación de las mujeres en la botánica, a pesar de su constante participación. Si bien la botánica tiene raíces antiguas y contribuciones masculinas reconocidas, las aportaciones femeninas permanecen en gran parte ocultas por la carencia de fuentes y la naturaleza de su trabajo, a menudo considerado como “arte” en lugar de ciencia. El objetivo es analizar los obstáculos sociales, culturales e institucionales del siglo XIX.

Abstract

This text explores the historical under-representation of women in botany, despite their constant participation. While botany has ancient roots and recognised male contributions, female contributions largely remain hidden due to a lack of sources and the nature of their work, often considered “art” rather than science. The goal is to analyse the social, cultural, and institutional obstacles faced from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
