A lo largo de la historia, el alcohol ha estado profundamente arraigado en diversas culturas, a pesar de su impacto negativo en la salud. Hoy en día, continúa siendo la sustancia psicoactiva de mayor consumo a nivel global. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud su prevalencia alcanza 52.2% en hombres y 35.4% en mujeres. En México, los datos más recientes de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición indican que el 55% de los adultos mayores de 20 años y el 20.6% de los adolescentes de entre 10 y 19 lo han ingerido.
