Seg\u00fan el\u00a0art\u00edculo, el planeta se ha contra\u00eddo hasta 7 km en los\u00a0\u00faltimos 4 mil millones de a\u00f1os, cantidad muy por\u00a0encima de los 0.8 o 3 km que se cre\u00eda y que se hab\u00edan\u00a0reportado mediante fotogeolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>A partir de observaciones de la misi\u00f3n Messenger\u00a0de la NASA, se ha captado que esta contracci\u00f3n es\u00a0resultado de que el planeta, al contrario de la Tierra,\u00a0est\u00e1 formado por una sola placa tect\u00f3nica, la cual sufre\u00a0de enfriamiento y se contrae, adem\u00e1s de deformaciones\u00a0que se presentan como crestas y fallas en la superficie.\u00a0A partir de las observaciones, los\u00a0investigadores lograron identificar 5 mil 934 crestas y\u00a0escarpas producto de la contracci\u00f3n, un n\u00famero superior\u00a0de lo que se conoc\u00eda anteriormente.
